Episode 1-5

Undead Unluck. I’ve been waiting a long time for this anime and boy has it been a joy. Undead Unluck follows a young woman named Fuuko Izumo who suffers from an unlucky body that causes unlucky events to happen to those she makes direct contact with in magnitude relative to how much she cares for them. Being responsible for her parents’ death and admitting defeat to idea of ever finding love, Fuuko is prepared to take her life. It is at that moment Fuuko meets a man known only as undead who earns his namesake through his inability to die. In search of a chance to live with other people and the chance at a permanent death respectively, the two learn to rely on each other and friends they make a long their journey.

I have been reading this manga for a couple of years now and have thoroughly enjoyed myself. Undead Unluck plays on the idea of fighting fate and disobeying destiny to carve your own path. It was extremely important for me that the anime not only captures the charm of the characters and the series but also elevates it. One of the main points of contention with the manga was the fact that the art style follows conventions more inline with manga of the 90s.

There is even a somewhat meta acknowledgment of this in the later chapters. The evolution of these characters and their designs cut the edge the further you read but that fruit is only offered to those who continue. The anime finds a way to respect Totsuki’s art style while also presenting these characters in a way that aligns with current design philosophies. Undead Unluck has also never shied away from introducing more complicated ideas for attacks or abilities within it’s world so having the visual aid of animation does an excellent job at satisfying any potential issues the manga medium could provide for understanding. Overall I am extremely interested in continuing my viewing experience with Undead Unluck. If it sounds like your cup of tea, check out the trailer below:
