One Last Trip With Good Ol’ “Logan”

Logan

James Mangold

2017

We are taking it to the wild, wild west with…. Logan? Ah yes. Logan. No I will not stop gushing about comic book movies. Especially not one in my top 3 movies of all time. See when I was growing up Spider-man was cool. The Avengers who? No, I was all about the X-Men. The Fox Studio version to be exact.

Now that I am older I understand how far he misses the mark in terms of being comic accurate but I love Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of Wolverine (Logan). The gruff yet suave nature of his line delivery could keep anybody entertained. When Hugh is onscreen you almost forget how impractical it would be to have 3 samurai sword jet out of your knuckles but boy are they cool. Now against what some other people may say I am a fan of Wolverine’s prior solo outings. Not many superheroes can say that each of their solo films only got better in succession (maybe Captain America but let’s be honest, Civil War is an Avengers film).

Logan brings the character full circle. After being saved by Charles Xavier in the first film and given purpose he now finds himself the only X-Men left, dutifully caring for the man that had given him so much in a demented state. Logan, now slowly wasting as his healing factor has degenerated to the point that it can no longer passively combat his adamantium poison, faces one last mission to do the right thing and ensure the future of mutantkind.

You can tell James Mangold just loves these characters. Mangold has shown that he understood Wolverine’s character well since the making of The Wolverine. Intensely loyal yet deeply jaded, the compulsion to see him make the decision we all know he will never gets old. Hugh Jackman had the opportunity to do a great service to the character as his last outing as the Wolverine. Or it was until Disney got the X-Men back. Hey, I’m not complaining.
