Bagdad Cafe (1987)

Bagdad Cafe

Jasmin is a tourist who came to the United States from Germany with her husband. However, for some reason, she has a big fight with her husband and walks all the way to the Baghdad cafe alone. When she met Brenda there, she had already had a fight with her husband and had kicked him out. Brenda is initially suspicious of Jasmin when she starts staying at her Baghdad cafe, but she later gradually opens her heart to her thanks to her sincere attitude and magical skills that charm people. She eventually runs a cafe together and Brenda finally lives a life filled with laughter.

Their friendship began when Jasmin and Brenda began to recognize each other’s ‘non-existing part’, including their own lack. Jasmin had known that Brenda’s husband had left since she first came to the Baghdad Cafe. Coincidentally, she too had separated from her husband. Meanwhile, the film doesn’t say whether Brenda was aware of Jasmin’s absence from her husband, but what is clear is that she came to realize that Jasmin’s children were absent.

Some people hurt me, and some people give me new energy. Such is the relationship between the main characters Jasmin and Brenda. Two people who have lived conflicting lives meet each other on a day when they feel deeply hurt by the person closest to them. To Brenda, Jasmin was a suspicious, awkward, and unacceptable outsider, but the positive energy she carries with her changes Brenda’s mind.

Their camaraderie is like a boomerang (which often appears in movies). Like a boomerang, it comes back even after many changes and even ups and downs. As we live our lives, we recognize each other’s shortcomings, and although we sometimes fight, we ultimately stand in solidarity. The movie lyrically shows that no matter how difficult life is, the more connected we are, the stronger we become and that this is an inevitable process.
